David Oakley’s 1st Design job was at Mary Glasgow Magazines (MGP) in London where he designed ELT magazines. He then joined Heinemann/Pearson as a Managing Designer for their busy (very!) primary book division. Helen Reilly started out as an assistant picture editor at MGP, then became an art editor for a Medical Publishers in Kingston Upon Thames managing everything from media research to artwork commissioning to photoshoot management before moving to Heinemann/Pearson and doing more of the same – but this time on school curriculum books. In 1997 we went freelance and eventually set up Arnos Design Ltd (named after an area in Bristol). We are now in Chipping Norton (2012). Helen is an English literature & Language graduate with an ELT teaching background and is a keen photographer. She has lots of experience in commissioning illustration ( and is branching into animation); managing and directing shoots and is an expert on professional image research and is very hot on permissions! They often work on projects together providing a design packager-type service but also engage in separate projects.
As an author for Oxford University Press, I have been lucky enough to have had Arnos Design Ltd as part of a team on some very successful ELT publishing projects, including Oxford Exchange, Adventures, English Plus and Language for Life. In whatever role, whether it be Graphics, Shoot management, illustration commissioning or media research, AD always brings enthusiasm, professionalism, patience and an open mind. Both Helen and Dave are a delight to work with and for me it was always hugely reassuring to know that they are part of our team. An added bonus was Dave’s graphic illustrations skills.

Helen was a joy to work with, very calm and methodical and has extensive knowledge in picture buying and the secondary school book market. I always feel my projects are in very safe hands when Helen is working on them. I am looking forward to working with Helen again.
